BTW, the name of the planet in the opening sequence of Star Trek: Into Darkness is “Nibiru.” And anyone who has seen the movie and knows what happens there, who also has read any of the “Ancient Astrononaut/Alien” theory beliefs about Nibiru hopefully will appreciate what is a truly stellar subtle joke.

How do you get your multiple photos on one screen? Is there an app you use? And I am a fan of your pictures on ModCloth. Keep on stylin :)

I use an app called “InstaCollage.” It was free when I got it but there’s a pay version too. I’m sure there’s better ones it was just the first one I came across. I like it because I can export directly into Instagram with it.

I wore this dress without tights in the photo I used for my meme that got a little heat and drove many of you to this page to begin with. Oddly enough, every time I looked at that photo I thought, ooh, that dress may have been too short to wear without tights, and I haven’t done so since.

Pretty frequent dress for me but paired it with some brand new women’s sneakers that I got at Payless this weekend. Really like them, they were actually double laced with a purple shoelace too which I wore last night with my Soda Fountain dress, but took out today since I was wearing this black and white number with subtle blues in my bracelet, necklace and eyeshadow.

Yesterday I was fully intending to let this go, and I’ve really debated if I want to continue this argument any longer, but I just can’t let it sit because I really, really hate it when people put words in my mouth and put positions on me that I never said and that I don’t believe. So, I’ve included the quotes below, because I honestly think that anyone being rational here will see what I wrote, and what this person says is “EXACTLY” what I said, and can tell that they’re not the same thing, at all.

To be clear, I resent vehemently the accusation of victim blaming and I think it’s more than ludicrous a stretch to say that by saying everyone should be more empathetic to everyone, that what I’m really saying is that the oppressed should take time to educate their oppressors and that if they don’t, it’s their fault for being oppressed.

I very clearly said “if everyone could just take a moment to consider the perspective of others.”

And it, to me is actually ironic here that this argument is happening because they not only are not taking a moment to consider my perspective here, but they’re actually going out of their way to deny it, and twist it into something inflammatory. And all this because I said that I’m personally not a fan of dismissing criticism by saying “fuck those people.”

If Mirkwood or anyone else wants to have a real discussion about what I actually said, which is that I believe that humans beings should all be more universally empathetic to each other, I’m open to hear why you think that’s problematic. But I’m done with being put into a position of being asked to defend a stance that I never took and don’t believe in and is ludicrous.

You DID say that though. Here is what you said:

It’s pretty clear here that you’re advocating that not only is it your position to educate everyone you come across who invalidates you, but that if other people took your approach, social issues would be solved.

This is not an advertisement of a personal approach. This is a judgement on individuals who do not take your approach. It’s blaming them for their own oppression, because if they would just take the time to consider other people’s perspectives, social issues would be solved. So it’s OUR fault. Basically.

That’s EXACTLY what you said. And it sounds like classic internalised victim blaming.

I forget where I read it, but it was a parenting magazine, but if you stop all electronics an hour before you go to bed it’s supposed to help you sleep better.

I need to do that because I’m seriously developing some mild insomnia. I don’t want to take sleeping pills if I can help it.

Yeah I saw that too in psychology video I did subtitles on at work. It’s actually specifically about LCD type screens found on most modern devices and newer TVs. It’s something to do with the light and how it messes with your ability to achieve REM sleep. But older TVs don’t do it and e-readers like basic kindles with e-ink don’t. (Fires do, iPads do.)

I actually love Boca burgers and also that Quorn stuff. The drawback is that, of course, it’s an extremely processed food. But it’s delicious. Man, now I want some Quorn. And why is it called Quorn anyway when it’s a mycoprotein?

That aside, I enjoy that stuff not because I’m replacing meat. I’m certainly not doing that. I eat it because it tastes good on its own.

If you want an awesome veggie burger that isn’t extremely processed, my personal favorites are the veggie masala burgers from Trader Joe’s. They’re more just shaped like burgers than actually trying to emulate meat, but they’re super delicious. I actually usually end up eating them over rice or noodles or salad instead of as a sandwich.

So around the time that Apple switched to their maps app instead of the Google-based one they used to have, there was an article online about it. I posted a comment about how the old Google map app on the iphone wasn’t exactly the best GPS either:

Just last week, before updating to iOS6 I asked google maps on my iphone to take me to a movie theatre in LA that I’d never been to. Even though it named the theatre by name, it took me to a totally different area of town miles away from the theater. The Beverly Hills civic center, instead of the Nuart in Santa Monica. Google maps also never had voice support despite the fact that most people using map apps on their phone do so while driving. So Google can throw as many stones in their glass houses as they want, but so far I don’t find the growing pains of my new maps app to be all that bad.

So today I noticed on Disqus that I had these old comments. The funny thing is that I’ve since abandoned the Apple maps app and started using the Google Maps iPhone app that they released a couple months later. But I love how angry these people are about the fact that I like a different app than they do.

My favorite is the person who made the name silverman_hater just to shit on me. That’s power guys.

Also to my knowledge if there are two movie theaters in the Los Angeles area called the Nuart, one of them is not located in the Beverly Hills Civic Center. I could be wrong.

Oh man! I actually just started working on a bit onstage about this. I eat meat but I’ve never understood why people give vegetarians or vegans a hard time for eating meat substitutes.

First off, why does it matter to you what someone else eats, like how does a morningstar burger have any effect on how much you might enjoy McDonalds?

Second very few people stop eating meat simply because they don’t like the taste.

The joke I’m working on is that I think meat eaters get threatened by substitutes is because we know the second they perfect that shit to where it tastes exactly like meat, we officially become monsters.

Sidenote, I love Morningstar’s buffalo wing substitutes, if all veggie subs were as good as those I’d be able to swear off meat in a heartbeat.

You’re right. It would be insulting to suggest that people who don’t take the time to educate people aren’t practicing what they preach. But luckily for me, that’s not what I said.

What I said was: “one of my most prevalent beliefs is that a vast number of social issues could be solved if everyone could just take an extra moment to consider the perspective of others and have some consideration of where they are coming from.”

This is a personal belief that I put upon myself, and no one else. I said this is how I feel, not anyone else. I can’t say that someone is not practicing what they preach if they don’t preach this. But also, that statement isn’t about educating others. That would be an external, outward activity. What I described above is an internal, introspective activity.

In the case of the article I posted about Richard Branson cross dressing as the result of a bet, I felt based on my attempt to empathize with others, that I can see why someone who is not transphobic, misogynistic or otherwise overtly bigoted might not see if as problematic based on their perspective. To most people, this type of stunt happens quite frequently in pop culture, so frequently that a lot of decent people are desensitized to it and don’t recognize the embedded misogyny and transphobia inherent in it.

It actually happened in an early Simpsons episode, which I as a kid— even with an awareness of my own gender concerns— didn’t register as being problematic. So in this particular case, the one line that I added in the end that was an attempt to educate, was a secondary aspect following the initial response of attempted empathy. Is that always the appropriate response? No. And I never said it was.

So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.

This is awesome. If there’s anyone out there who has something about themselves that they want to share with the world but are afraid to, check out stories like this. Because if you can find the courage to be yourself maybe just maybe you’ll inspire that next person to stare down their own fears as well.
